Case Study

Working with Pro Bono Economics to shine a light on the charity sector during Covid-19

Charity Pro Bono Economics (PBE) uses economics to support the social sector and to increase wellbeing across the UK. Co-founded by Andy Haldane, Chief Economist at the Bank of England, and chaired by Lord Gus O’Donnell, PBE combines project work for individual not-for-profits and social enterprises with policy research that can drive systemic change.

To monitor the impact of Covid-19 on the charity sector, SurveyGoo partnered with Pro Bono Economics, and Senso Communications, to design an ongoing charity tracker survey. Using the data produced by the survey,  we have been able to demonstrate that:

  • Charities are now facing a £10.1 billion funding gap over the next six months: charity income is expected to drop by £6.7 billion, while demand for charity support looks set to rise by the equivalent of £3.4 billion.
  • 58% of charities are expected to cut back services as coronavirus set to cost sector 60,000 jobs.

These findings have generated over 400 pieces of coverage with an audience reach of 1.9 billion people, while providing a powerful reminder to government that the charity sector needs as much financial support as other industry sectors.
